Deeva Muir lives in the remote town of Leonora in the Northern Goldfields. Muir is inspired by the natural environment of the desert and her interactions with the landscape based on family connection through spirituality and kinship. Muir is married to Kado Muir, a Ngalia cultural leader, whose family maintains strong spiritual and cultural linkages to country in the desert and Northern Goldfields region through birth totems, lifeway association and ancestral linkages. Muir was born in Malaysia from Sri Lankan Tamilian background and uses a unique cross cultural perspective to incorporate these three different cultures in her arts practice.
“I am bringing cross cultural insights to work with how I design and tell stories from an artistic point of view. My landscapes and ceramics seek to capture the attraction of beauty, veiled by the brutal extreme of desert conditions. The harsh, unforgiving heat of the sun on rocks, dead trees and blue skies, yet my relationship with the landscape is filtered through my exposure to my husband’s and children’s family’s spiritual and cultural connection to country, giving me insights into country I seek to communicate through these works.”
